Ford Expedition True expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the Ford Expedition can tow any of these. Ford adds a new top end King Ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards. The Expedition is meant for utility, not posing.

Default expedition air ride suspension problem

I have a 99 ford expedition 4x4 wit automatic 4 wheel air ride. I started by testing the compressor by jumping the relay, the compressor wouldn't run so i replaced the compressor and relay. now the problem remains the compressor doesn't turn on only if i jump it. But even if I run it the rear end wont raise, the compressor would get hot but no raising. Is it possible for this car to be so broken down for everything in the air ride be broken down??? i mean if the relay is not getting a signal may be the air ride module is broken. if the rear end doesn't raise after forcing the compressor on, are the rear air fill solenoids broken or do the computer also controls these solenoids and they do not actuate or let the air thru to the bags???
I will appreciate your help since I've never experienced so many problems on a single car system....

the solenoids wont open even if you make the motor run,it could be the rear sensor or the control module.

i had a problem with the compressor and airbags...first it was the compressor, it was constantly working because the airbags were shot. i burned out one compressor. the back end sat as low as possible and it was the WORST ride ever. finally replaced both and it's been fine ever since. Ford Air Bags, Ford Air Ride, Ford Air Shocks, Ford Air Suspension, All Ford air suspensions available. - Suncore Industries.
is where i purchased my compressor and airbags.

The rubber on the airsprings in the Expedition over time will dry rot and crack, thus causing pin holes in them. Often times the cracks and holes are so tiny or in a crease where you cannot see. But if your compressor has gone, it is usually due to the decrease in air, then the compressor has to work overtime. It is only about the size of a coffee can, and is not designed to continuously run. If you replaced the compressor, you probably should replace the air bags. Also, when you do that you will need to go ahead and replace the dryer. If you are interested in totally eliminating the air suspension, you can look into coil over spring conversion kits. The ones that Strutmaster sells has a lifetime warranty. If you want to, contact me and we can discuss what is going on with the Expy. melanie@strutmasters.com

Hi, I had the same problem with my 97 Expedition's Air Ride system in 2007. I ended up replacing my compressor, relays, and the air ride module. almost $1000 later it was fixed and riding like normal with a much quieter compressor. After my experience with this I probably will never get an air system again. When it does go out you really can cause serious damage to your rig if you drive it before you fix the problem.

I have a 2001 . I got tired of hearing the compressor running all the time and turned off the air bags. it rides a little rough but not bad. does this really cause serious damage to my truck?

Seems to be lot's of problems with these air ride systems, not just Expeditions but any air ride system. When it comes time to replace my Expedition, I will not buy one with air ride.

sounds like you have a leak in the system and the pressure is too low. the compressor won't come on if it doesn't see the enough pressure on the low side. it already happened on subaru parts.

I have a 4x4 with the air ride susupension. I replaced the air compressor about a year ago because the piston rod in the compressor had actually broken in two places. Occasionally the back end will still drop down, and the check suspension light will come on. I have checked underneath for leaks with some soapy water and have not found any. I am thinking that my problem could be from a faulty sensor or something.
What is the part that actually controls the air getting to the rear?
