Ford Expedition True expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the Ford Expedition can tow any of these. Ford adds a new top end King Ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards. The Expedition is meant for utility, not posing.

Need a more accurate description of intermittent start? Turn the key & nothing happens? Other times completely normal? Maybe just a clicking noise? Starter cranks fine but engine doesn't fire sometimes? Tries to fire? Slow, weak or dies off quick cranking? Codes (engine light)? etc..

Is it diff with a hot or cold engine? Do you smell fuel when it doesn't start?

Fundamentals fo a start assuming an engine in working order is fuel & spark (ignition system, electrical, wires, sensors etc) at the right time.

If you can find out if the plugs are firing (easy with a timing gun) during a start attempt, then good be its a fuel problem. Idea is tyo narrow things down & rule stuff out that is known to be working then go after what's not.

Any info on when the spark plugs & wires were last done?

Default 2000 Expedition EB intermittent starting

Our 2000 Expedition EB started doing that this month, too. Battery is strong and good. Will start with no hesitancy most times.

Three times this month, now, my wife has almost got stranded on her lunch break away from the office. It's hot (high 90's in Texas). All the lights come on, things ding, dash lights are good, it just won't crank over (no click, no nothing).

She'll arm and disarm the alarm, move it out of Park to Neutral and try again -- nothing. With no rhyme or reason, it will finally crank over strong, and start, without "fiddling" with the control column, shifter, or anything else. No more issues for a week or so, then it will do this again.

It's got the big V8. What to check next, where to start?

I don't think it's the coil, if it were, it would crank but not start. It's not cranking or clicking. That makes me think "ignition switch or starter".

How to verify or troubleshoot before buying parts?

Check your brake interlock switch. It should be easy to locate, get down and get the brake pedal, follow it up under the dash. The switch it pushes on is the one I am talking about. Take the wiring harness off and re-seat it on the switch. You are making sure you have a good connection on that switch. Good luck, let us know.

Thanks, BigD; I'll give that a try. Might be a week or so before we have "issues" again, but I will report back.

I have also had a similar sounding problem. I talked with my mechanic about it some time ago and he said there some part connected with the fuel system (I'm sorry but it was a long time ago and I can't remember the name of the part anymore). He said it can get stuck. If you press the gas peddle to the floor while attempting to start the vehicle, it unsticks the little valve and it will start. This will NOT work if you pump the gas peddle. You have to hold it down while starting. The next time it happened - I tried it and it worked! You will need to get the part changed at some point because it also affects gas mileage but at least you won't be stranded.

Maybe a fuel pressure regulator?

bzgirl21,
The part you are referring to is the Idle Air Control Valve IAC.

What does the IAC do? How does it work?
Ford Fuel Injection » Idle Air Bypass (IAB)
Check and clean your IAC
Ford Explorer IAC Fix .: Articles

Had a similar problem on my 2000. It ended up being the windshield leaking water down into the Gem moduale and fuse box. That is the crossroads for all of the electrical system wiring. Corosion set in , and it started doing some wierd stuff.Check for water under the drivers floor mat.
