Ford Expedition True expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the Ford Expedition can tow any of these. Ford adds a new top end King Ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards. The Expedition is meant for utility, not posing.

Default Transmission problem stuttering when going into OD

OK, so I think this is tranny related.

The frist couple of gears shift smooth as butter, like they are brand new. The last gear, and OD however, stutter for a second (sometimes the last gear doesn't, OD always does) when shifting.

Now this occurs when I'm accelerating. If I let off of the gas right before the shift, it goes into gear fine.

I've been trying to research. I dropped the pan, changed the filter and replaced the oil that came out with the pan. I found the dipstick...um..thingy(don't know the name) that indicates no one has ever dropped the pan. That really didn't make any difference.

Now, I'm trying to determine if I should change the throttle control sensor, or the TCC (thats the one that is accessable from dropping the pan, right?)

On another note, I've read that replacing the spark plugs might help. I've been wanting to do this regardless, but it seems to be idling fine. Also, there are zero codes. Check engine light isn't on either.

Any ideas before I run up to autozone to buy stuff? I planned on doing a full fluid change on the tranny instead of just the fluid that comes out when the pan is dropped.

I'd add some Seafoam brand trans conditioner too. I bet it is a failing TCC solenoid though. IDK, where this solenoid is located at...

Good luck.

Default Update

OK, well, I just got done doing a complete fluid change via the instructions here:

Ford F-150 AODE Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

They were easy to follow and worked perfect. In addition, I got lucky. Because I'm 6'9", have long arms, and work out once in a while, I didn't need someone to crank the engine until I could see the torque converter drain plug. I could reach myself and look at the same time

So I drained that, took about 10 minutes. The article said it could take hours....maybe I got lucky. Then I put the plug back in the torque converter, and dropped the pan. It looked clean; I dropped the pan about two months ago. Changed the filter, again, all very easy. Although I will say, make sure that the old rubber piece on the old oil filter doesn't stay in the tranny when you pull the filter off. I couldn't put the new filter in and it took me a second to see that the rubber piece wasn't on the old filter. I took a pair of needle nose pliers and fished it out.

Put it all back together and I must have not have gotten all of the fluid out. From what I've been reading, it will take about 15 quarts? (I guess). I got almost 12 in it.

Drove it around the block and it feels even smoother than before. Also, the last gear that sometimes stutter is completely smooth now. OD, however, still have a little studder to it. It's WAAYYYY better. Like hitting a tiny pot hole now.

My question is, should I give it a month, and redo this process? Do you guys think that will help?

On a side note, when I was in the auto parts store, on the guys told me he was a ford mechanic for 20 years. He said he doubts its the soleonoid, or any other sensors. He said Ford tranny's, around my year, were "infamous" for what he called the "torque converter shudder". He said Fords fist fix was changing to mercon V (which I used). He said if this didn't fix it I'd probably need a new torque converter. ($271.00, I asked).

UPDATE:

Drove it around town and the little shudder is now gone. It's like a brand new tranny!

Can't believe different fluid makes that much of a different.

Good to hear this news, and thanks for posting this update. Did you add any trans conditioner?

I added The Lucas tranny treatment, but just that and the regular fluid.

I think I have a small leak, I'll have to crawl under it after work tonight and see if there is any loose bolts......grrrr...
