OK, well, I just got done doing a complete fluid change via the instructions here:
Ford F-150 AODE Automatic Transmission Fluid Change
They were easy to follow and worked perfect. In addition, I got lucky. Because I'm 6'9", have long arms, and work out once in a while, I didn't need someone to crank the engine until I could see the torque converter drain plug. I could reach myself and look at the same time
So I drained that, took about 10 minutes. The article said it could take hours....maybe I got lucky. Then I put the plug back in the torque converter, and dropped the pan. It looked clean; I dropped the pan about two months ago. Changed the filter, again, all very easy. Although I will say, make sure that the old rubber piece on the old oil filter doesn't stay in the tranny when you pull the filter off. I couldn't put the new filter in and it took me a second to see that the rubber piece wasn't on the old filter. I took a pair of needle nose pliers and fished it out.
Put it all back together and I must have not have gotten all of the fluid out. From what I've been reading, it will take about 15 quarts? (I guess). I got almost 12 in it.
Drove it around the block and it feels even smoother than before. Also, the last gear that sometimes stutter is completely smooth now. OD, however, still have a little studder to it. It's WAAYYYY better. Like hitting a tiny pot hole now.
My question is, should I give it a month, and redo this process? Do you guys think that will help?
On a side note, when I was in the auto parts store, on the guys told me he was a ford mechanic for 20 years. He said he doubts its the soleonoid, or any other sensors. He said Ford tranny's, around my year, were "infamous" for what he called the "torque converter shudder". He said Fords fist fix was changing to mercon V (which I used). He said if this didn't fix it I'd probably need a new torque converter. ($271.00, I asked).
