Ford Expedition True expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the Ford Expedition can tow any of these. Ford adds a new top end King Ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards. The Expedition is meant for utility, not posing.

Unhappy Engine revs at idle in drive on occasion?

Its an 02 EB with the 5.4L, and on occasion when you pull up to a red light or in line at the local fast food joint, she will flat jump and scare the $#!+ out of you. It only does it when the engine is at idle and just a few seconds after you stop and your sitting there with your foot on the brake and the engine will rev up to about 1300-1500 rpms and lunge forward. Please help with this vehicle. It has 131,000 miles, is 4wd, no codes, no service engine light comes on. Checked with several dealerships and they have no clue.

Thought the wife was full of it and thought she was but she's not. It finally happenend to me. Now I think the truck is

PLEASE HELP!

Now that YOU experienced it, did you take it back to a dealership?
There is no doubt in my mind that they respect the opinion/concerns of a man than they do of a woman.

Does the 02 have a throttle pedal position sensor?

ARe your floor mats attached to the floor? If not do they move around?

Surging idle could be a couple of things.

Dirty IAC
faulty TPS,
MAF,
Vacuum leak.

Same thing has happened to me on several occasions. I have a '01 EB with 150K. Can't remember when it started but it has happened at least 5-6 times, usually when I'm pulling into the garage, which scares the $hit out of me since I don't have a lot of extra room in there. If anyone has a clue please let me know

No codes found.

I am currently dealing with a p0171 issue that just popped up this weekend, but this problem has been going on for awhile so I'm not sure if this is related or not.

P0171 lean on one side, I fforget which, is often a vacuum leak.
I mentioned above that the surging idle may be caused by a vacuum leak, so you might be in luck.

Checking for vacuum leaks.
Some of the sensors and some of the actuators either read the amount of vacuum, or use vacuum to move controls, therefore it is important to the proper functioning of the engine that your vacuum system is fully intact. Otherwise one may get codes falsely indicating that there is a problem with a controller/actuator, or a sensor when in reality it is caused by a lack of vacuum.

Look at your rubber vacuum hoses (they are about 1/4 - 3/8 inches in diameter, if they are dry rotted or cracked, replace them. IF they slip on/off of their connectors too easily, they may have stretched out a little bit, cut the ends off, and put them back on.

You may listen for a leak. Sometimes using a cut off piece of garden hose is a good aid to listen with. Sometimes a cardboard tube (like from gift wrapping paper) is helpful. Just remember that whenever you stick your head inside a running engine compartment, that you are not wearing any loose clothing or jewelry that can get caught.

Another suggestion is to use a spray can of carb cleaner and spray around the bottom of the intake manifold, and the base of the throttle body assembly. IF there is a leak, you should hear a change in your engine.
Keep a fire extinguisher handy, or use water instead of carb cleaner (it works, but not as well.) Be aware that if you use water and the wires get wet and it runs worse... your wires may be bad, and the water is allowing them to arc instead of jump the gap of the spark plug.

Another suggestion is: to take a propane torch, turn it on (but don't light it) and move it over the vacuum hoses and connections. The engine RPM's will increase if there is a leak and the propane gets sucked in.

Courtesy of TheOldWizard... Don't forget to remind folks to check the PCV valve, hose and grommet !

Thanks BroncoJoe, I have been looking into the vacuum lines and haven't found any problems yet but I will continue the search and maybe try the carb cleaner or propane method.
