Ford Expedition True expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the Ford Expedition can tow any of these. Ford adds a new top end King Ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards. The Expedition is meant for utility, not posing.

Default Need help - New 4.6L or swap in a 5.4L???

Hey guys - sorry if this has already been posted, but I'm not finding it if so.

I have a 1997 Expedition - in love with this thing!! - but the head gasket just blew, and Ford recommends replacing the engine. I have a 4.6L (Romeo... "W") right now; I hear that I would have to have a 4.6L from a 97/98 to change directly (99 changed the heads, new ECU/harness needed?).

I've been wondering about putting a 5.4L into it, since I have to replace the engine anyway, you know? Anybody know what's involved in the swap?

Thanks!!

I have a 99 van with the 4.6 and was wondering if swaping to the 5.4 is a lot of trouble also - computers, drive line etc.

DON'T LET THE DEALERSHIP BULLSHIT YOU LIKE THAT! I can guarantee you're gonna run into all sorts of problems swapping engines on your own. It can be done, but you need to find someone who has done this before and knows exactly which components need to be changed out with it. Most of the time it requires replacing the transmission and some electrical components.

As far as the blown head gasket (which these trucks are known for), replace the head gasket and have the head resurfaced at a machine shop if it's out of specs. The dealership won't tell you this because it's easier, and more profitable as far as labor time and part prices via dealership, to have you pay for a whole new engine rather than repairing the blown head. The dealerships price for a new engine isn't cheap, neither are the rebuilts they have available. Take it to another mechanic other than the dealership, or tell the dealership to replace the gasket and stop trying to empty your pockets just to make life easier for them. They charge like $50-$100/ hour, make them earn it or take your business elsewhere. This head gasket is a common issue for these trucks; I just wish Ford would be more accountable when it comes to recalls and faulty parts. Ford is known for this!
