Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default Noise when I turn

I have seen the noise while turning issue on here but I have not found a resolution.
My situation is as follows:
I drove my 1997 Explorer AWD, SportTrack ,or whatever the term Ford uses for it, to New Orleans last weekend and on the way back I stopped to gas up. When I turned the wheel while leaving the gas pump there was a grinding noise. It reminded me of a cv joint going bad on a front wheel drive car.
It does not do it while driving straight and it seems to do it after it has been driven a while.
I drove to the airport Monday a relatively short 10 mile distance and it did not make the noise.
It is a 1997 Explorer Sport with 4WD and the bigger 6 cylinder.
Any suggestions on troubleshooting tips or possible causes would be much appreciated. I intend to try to diagnose the problem this weekend.
Earnie

I would say to check your CV joint, check to see if the boot is tore or anything obvious. Also, you can check the wheel bearing hub assembly (front bearing). Lift the side up thats making the noise, grab the wheel on the top and bottom and try to rock it back and forth. If it moves, chances are you need a bearing. thats what I did. Hope that helps.
