Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Question Purchased 95 Explorer and having problems after 1 week

Hi, I recently purchased a 1995 Explorer XLT. I drove 300 miles and having problems already. I hope someone can help. First, when driving on highway and when a little extra power is needed for a hill, it makes a loud vibration noise until you give it gas to go into a lower gear. I drove in a friends Mountaineer and his did the same thing a year ago and he is still driving it. Next, when started, it would not idle up to 1000 like usual and only to 250 or so and act like it wants to quit. When you put it in reverse it would then quit. But it did not do this all the time. Now, it did this and quit and would not start again. So, I have yet to get it started. I hope someone has some ideas of things I can check as I do not have the money to fix in a shop after just purchasing this vehicle.

Thanks. I located the fuel filter and fuel line but cannot locate where I'd check the fuel pressure on my vehicle. Any specific advice on checking this?

Update: I found the valve to release pressure from fuel line and changed the fuel filter. It still won't start. Checked the valve again and gas comes out. What would be a good thing to check next?

Updated: It started! A friend came over and recommended I bang the fuel tank while he turned it over and sure enough it started. He said sometimes the fuel pump gets stuck so at least I know what it is.

I will look at getting it changed and not drive it much until I do so. It already wouldn't start after turning it off. Plus, I noticed it would sputter when turning right or left.
