Ford ExplorerFord Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.
I have a 1996 Ford Explorer and when I am accelerating I sometimes hear a faint machingun like noise. It's not very loud, but if I turn down my radio I can hear it more clearly. Does anyone have an idea of what this may be? I just had my trans rebuilt, so I think I can rule that out - it was happening prior to my Tranny issue. It seems as though it's coming from the engine, but I'm not 100% sure. I have a 1996 Ford Explorer 2wh drive 6 cy engine with 175,000 miles. I would love to clear this noise up so I can get a smooth sounding ride.
I know it's a 6cy motor, but other than that I'm not sure. It's just a troubling noise (troubling in that I feel like it'll break down if I don't find the cause). It's probably the original motor that cam with the 1996 Ford Ex. Eddie Bower Edition.
if its a single over head cam its because there is a chain behind the motor thats hitting the fire wall i believe it is nothing to worry about im told but its very annoying ben~
Thanks for the reply 97 Xploder. I'm not sure if it's a single overhead cam. The noise isn't very loud; would the chain cause a faint noise to be heard? The sound is like tick.tick.tick very fast and faint..
Funny enough--I have a 98 Explorer with the V8 and it does the exact same thing. Very obvious during hard acceleration after initial start, but after a few starts and stops (once the engine seems to warm up I guess) the noise goes away. Did it during cold weather and now does the same in warm weather. Once you turn it off and it sits for a while, the noise returns, only to go away again after 5-10 minutes of driving.
Any other ideas out there?
Kevin

I had the same sound comming from my engine. Drove me insane. I sent it to the shop to have them look it over and they said i needed new spark plugs and wires and went off on everything else they could make money from. about 8 months after putting up with the sound i decided to up my truck. I just put headers and roller rockers in my X. While removing the valve covers i found out that the seal on the drivers side was busted and was causing an exhaust leak. After putting in the RR and I replaced the old destroyed seals with new seals, presto the ticking sound was gone. Which was music to my ears. Check the seals aroun the valve covers.
