Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default '98 front end suspension noise

Hey all, my front end has been rattling on bumps ever since I bought it a year ago. Rattling may not be the best word, might be kind of more of a clunk on all bumps even just the smallest ones. I've already replaced the upper ball joints. Maybe the lower ones? I've tried moving the tires up and down and side to side but they don't move (not loose). So I figure if they don't move at all it shouldn't be the ball joints or bearings, right? Or am I wrong? Anything else to check? It seems to be on both sides.

Inner tie rods on the Rack and Pinion. Have someone litely bounce the car while you touch the tie rod. You should be able to feel it if that is what is wrong. They usally make more noise on the small bumps.

I forgot to mention that we replaced the front shocks soon after getting it. so those are good. I'll check tie rods and sway bar, thanks.

Good call on the sway bar bushings. It was the ones that connect to the frame (though it stumped them for quite a while as nothing was easily loose, until the bounced it up and down a bit). I think for the first time in my life it was an inexpensive fix.
