Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default Noise from rear quarter on drivers side

First post/thread so hi to all users.

2002 XLT Explorer, noise from inside rear quarter like a knocking constant beat. Not washer pump as I operated that and could hear noise over it after removing access panel, but noise is close. Can be heard while parked or driving, does not change beat. Cuts off when ignition off, comes back on when start car. I think it is getting louder but not sure as am now listening for it more! What is it?

Do you have a factory sub back there? Could be acting up.

That noise you are heaing is the little motor that controls the air blend door on the rear air box. The gears are stripped and it's not operating the door like it should. There are two motors back there. (I'm assuming you have the rear temperature controls) I would recommend changing both while it's apart since it's a pain to disassemble the rear panel. I found them very cheap on amazon.com compared to what the local auto stores were asking for them. I can't recall the exact part number off hand but could look it up if wanted me to.

Default Thanks

That sounds like it, we don't operate the controls back there too much and when I changed them a few weeks ago I guess the thing stuck or something to strip the gears. will look into it, in meantime if you have part number it might save some time, thanks so much for your helpful reply, Chris.

Now has anyone thought about an electric conversion with lithium batteries to power our Explorers?

Just checked and by changing heater settings for the rear it made the noise louder and then quieter, had a quick look on Amazon but do not know what part is called so number would be useful, thanks again.
