Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default Thud sound while accelerating

Hello
I have 1997 Explorer
Whenever I accelerate more than I should-not pedal to the metal tho
I hear a thump thump thump. Feels like its going through the tires.
Im thinking there is not enough power getting to my rear wheels? have no clue tho.
also when i go around corners and some dips
Does anybody have a clue?
Thanks in advance

Its probably your transfer case engaging. If you have a 4Wd select option that could be it. See, ford has what they call, control trac in there explorers with V6's, and what it does ids when you car crusing around in"auto" it is in standard 2Wd untill it senses the rear wheels spinning faste than the front, so the computer engages the t-case to go to 4wd. . its a safty manouver. and it helps alot, gets great traction in the snow and winter!!

I bought a Explorer XLT V6 two weeks ago and I heard the same noise, but I'm getting use to it.

This is the Ford's Advance Trac antiskid system. Thank you for the explanation Z.

I got a 1998 V6 4.0 SOHC with the Automatic 4X4, I never hear any thumps.

Go to an empty parking lot. Crank your wheels all the way to the right and go in a circle slow, do this also in reverse slow, repeat turning left forwards and reverse in a circle too. If you hear clunks you need a new CV joint somewhere in your front end depending on what direction you were turning.

Please post your results.

if u only hear it when accelerating or bumps or corning it could very well be ur transfer case picking up the signal but i suspect it could be a broken tranny mount.
