Ford ExplorerFord Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.
Okay so I live in Nevada, and my check engine stays on. I went to Auto Zone and they told me its the second O2 sensor. But when I'm driving down in the bay area in California, the check engine light goes out and doesnt come back on till i get to nevada again. I was going to change the O2 sensor to help to identify the problem, but I figured if the light goes out when in another area maybe its something else. any idea what causes this?
WHat are the actual codes?
When you state, I went to Auto Zone and they told me its the second O2 sensor do you mean the one AFTER the CAT?
If so, I think that measures the functioning of the CAT.
When in Nevada, are you at a much higher altitude? I believe that the ACT built into the MAF essentially reads the barometric pressure. If that is dirty or malfunctioning, maybe that is your issue.

Next time your in NV for a few days, disconnect the ground cable from the battery for about 30 minutes. Reconnect and see if the light comes back on.
Reset the fuel trim tables? You're thinking altitude too aren't you?

I know that on older vehicles, if you changed altitude very much without shutting the key off, it will set a code (BARO), Just thinking it may be something connected to the MAF meter, in that you are working with different alt. and it being a problem at one area, but not at another.
