Ford ExplorerFord Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.
Hi Folks, I have a 2001 Eddie Bauer Explorer with the rear load leveling option. It has about 125K miles so I think it's time to change the shocks. Maybe I'm getting old, but the ride of my Explorer has deteriorated over the years so I would like to make some improvements in the ride quality. For tires I plan to buy some Michelin LTX M/S. The shocks are not as easy of a decision.
First is the rear load leveling. I like the option but am tired of the rough ride. Can the air shocks be removed and regular shocks be installed?
Second, is the brand of shock. I was considering the Rancho 9000 or the Edelbrock IAS. Any suggestions on a quality shock that provides a great ride?
I do not have any desire to lower or modify the ride height. I tow a small trailer on rare occasions.
