Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default 2002 OD Flashing Light

I purchased a used 2002 Ford Explorer and last week the O/D light starts flashing. I notice when I shift from Park to reverse, the shift is really rough. Also notice when in drive....i think when shifting to gear 4 or OD, it shifts really rough. Do I have a bad transmission or is this a sensor issue?

Thanks in advance for your help on this.

O/D light blinking. I have a 2002 Explorer. 84K...Today the trans was slipping between 1st and 2nd gear,.now, I had a problem a couple years ago of the car just stopped moving, engine on, not moving they (dealer) replaced some kind of clutch box between the engine and tranny. $900.00 later and now a problem with the tranny agin. I really do not want to go back to the deealer. Oh BTW, this is my second and last ford explorer. the 1994 explorer tranny went out at 75,000 miles...aggggg. is that a code of something? rapid blinking. I'll hang up and wait for listen for your answer...:-)

That cant be. No company can produce tranny fluid that wont get dirty and loose its lub power. That is IMPOSSIABLE. Ive never heard of that. Plus, unhook the line before it goes into the radiator.... just take it to a shop. They can do it.

You can change it, it just requires a special tool to pump the fliud into the bottom drain plug adapter. Just had mine done at shell lube shop for 85 bucks and she works like a dream. My expo had 116k miles and the fluid was slightly burnt and dirty so yeah, change your fluids!
