Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default Can't get explorer transfer case out of 4wd

I have a 91 Explorer.... Standard tranny-4 door. When I shift the transfer case shifter to 2wd, It is in 4wd, I know this because my front shaft is spins when i drive it, along with my axle U-joints. When I shift my transfer case to 2wd it just grinds when I put it into gear. Is there anyway I can get my transfer case to engage in 2wd... when it is actually shifted into it? It seems very odd, the transfer case has seemed to swap between 2wd and 4wd, while putting the shifter into 4wd, once again it grinds when i put it into gear. How do I reverse this process? Is there a linkage or sensor that needs to be worked on? My front left axle u-joint is clunking horribly... and I do not have the proper tools to work on it.... I just moved and I won't have the time or money to fix it as I am going back to my hometown. Help!!!!
