Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Exclamation 2003 Ford Explorer Sport XLT: Rev Limiter??

I just got a new muffler on my explorer; it sounds pretty awesome. I've never revved the engine up until now, I wanted to hear what my new exhaust sounded like. When I hit the gas I noticed the rpm went up to 3,000 and then went down, then back up, then down.. Is there a rev limiter on this model or something, or do I have a problem here?

All ford engines have had a rev limiter on them since about 1990. The rpm depends on the engine size and tire size and rear end gear ratio. They also have a road speed limiter on them that shuts the engine down at certain speeds, again variable.

The rev limiter cut in much earlier if you are not in gear.

I remember I had a customer with a 94 F150, 302, came into the dealer complaining of his truck missing and running real bad. I was the driveability tech at the time, so I looked at it and couldn't find anything wrong with it. He came by to pick it up at the end of the day and immediately came storming back into the shop, shouting at my manager about us not fixing his truck. We went out on the drive and he proceded to "show us" what was wrong. Started the truck up and laid the accelerator pedal on the floor. When it went into fuel cut, my boss and I just looked at each other and shook our heads.

Well, that's disappointing... Not that I'm planning on racing this thing or blowing up the engine from high revving, but is there a way to disable these things? Juuust wondering..
