Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Question Winter driving?

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I actually signed up because I just got a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT 2WD and I'm worried about its handling during the winter months. I had a Volvo before but got rid of it because I couldn't afford the upkeep. Normally, I love my Explorer...but I'm really not sure what it's going to be able to handle in the winter. I'm going to be commuting about an hour on the highway to/from work every day through the winter. Is there anything I should do to make it safer? I would really like not to skid off the road in the middle of winter...that would NOT make for a good day. And, if you can't already tell, I'm not too experienced in the winter driving area. I've done 4 winters in my Volvo but never long distances. Mostly around town.

Help? Advice?

It is pretty safe, people been driving RWD vehicles for years in the Winter. If you want throw 2, 70LB sand bags in the back over the rear axle just before snow season, the sand will add extra weight to help with traction.

Make sure you have good tread on the tires and the tires are inflated to the proper PSI. The proper PSI rating is found on the drivers door tag, DO NOT USE WHAT IS PRINTED ON THE TIRE!
