Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Exclamation Need Help with 93 Ford Explorer Manual Transmission and hydraulic clutch

Ok, so I recently bought a 93 explorer with 170k miles on it. The tranny seemed fine when I bought it, but would then sometimes was hard to get into 1st and other gears but mainly 1st and somewhat 2nd and 3rd.

Idk if it has anything to do with the low idle of 600rpms instead 750rpms which I thought was standard. So sometimes I would rev a little and it would go easier into 1st.

Anyways, changed the tranny fluid. Still no difference. Then all of a sudden when I was driving the clutch pedal lost pressure after a gear shift and had no clutch.

I checked the hydraulic clutch fluid reservoir and it was low so I added some. I still had very low pressure on the pedal, but If I pressed the pedal fast and hard i could at least shift but when I put it in gear all the pressure would leave the pedal and it would basically go into gear with no clutch. so from stop to first gear the car would lunge forward as soon as i put it in gear.

I bleed the slave cylinder with the bleed valve on the tranny and still no difference. I press the pedal hard and fast and got some pressure but in like 3 seconds it would lose all pressure and I could hear it suirting out somewhere but couldn't see where.

Then I accidentally tightend the bleed valve too hard and it broke off lol.

Now what do I do?

I know I have to replace the slave cylinder but what else?

Any tips, info, suggestions? Thank you very much!

For that age of vehicle I would replace BOTH the master and slave cylinders. If the tubing joining them is metal and heavily rusted, replace it also.

Thanks for the tip I will replace both and well I "unplugged" the line with the coupling tool to the slave cylinder in the tranny and the line had pressure (I could feel it in the clutch pedal) but I'ma recheck it to see if I should replace it too.

By the way anybody know how long it would take to replace the cylinders? I know I have to drop the tranny, but not sure exactly what equipment to use to lower it down when I do it. I got a Haynes service manual but it gives brief discriptions on how to drop the tranny...?

I'm not familiar with your specific installation. The last one I did had the slave cylinder mounted external to the transmission so it was quite easy to change.

If you have an internal slave cylinder, the process is pretty complicated- check a Chiltons manual.
