Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default 2003 explorer rear drive axle problem

I have been trying to remove my rear drive axle and i think i have everything holding it in removed but it will not budge with a pusher. is it possible that there is a retaining clip somewhere i may have missed?

You need to remove the cross pin holding the spider gears...then the axle will 'push' in enough to allow the "C" clip removal.

Forget the "C" clip, I was thinking of a different axle...brain fart

The CV shaft (axle) is held into the housing with a pressure clip. There is a special tool to help 'pop' it out, but you may be able to improvise a couple pry bars that should do the same thing. The shaft needs to be shocked loose vs. constant pressure.

I have it out of the differential but cant get the axle out of the hub. i removed the toe link and upper control arm from the knuckle so the knuckle is able to swing down but the shaft will not come out of the hub. I stripped one pusher already and have another on order. Should it come out this hard?

Maybe it's a cheap puller??
The axle can get badly rusted in place. Use penetrating oil along with the puller below. Once you get tension on the puller smack the end of it with a hammer then tighten it more, hammer ect. It needs to be shocked loose vs just pressure.
