Ford ExplorerFord Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.
hey guys/gals I have a 1997 4.0L explorer that I am having some issues with. Here is the scenerio: Every once in a while I will go to start my explorer and it will start, but run like poop for about 10 seconds then die. Then other times I will get it and it will run like a top. Now the only code that I am throwing is bank 1 o2 sensor. I have read on this forum (prior to posting) that once in a while the manifold gaskets will blow and in turn accept fresh air in to trick the o2 sensor(s) into thinking its lean/rich. So the engine will compensate. I would also think that if that was true it would do it more than once every 2 months or so.
Now could it be a IAC just needs replaced or cleaned? Also I have heard that the timing belt tensinors have oiling issues and once in a while will be out of whack. Could that be a possibility? Thanks in advance.
I have the same make, model, and problem, all I did was I cleaned out the front of the throttle body with carb/choke cleaner and replaced bank 1 & 2 sensor. I have't had the problem since. O and make sure you clean the back of the choke, thats where it gats all the build up.
