Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default 2000 Explorer will start but won't idle

Anybody have a problem with the vehicle starting but only stays running if you're giving it gas? As soon as foot lifts off the pedal it dies out. Any suggestions where to start looking for the problem?

---Had the same problem on my 99 Explorer. Mine had the same symptoms but went away when it warmed up for the most part. In my case it was a vacuum leak at the intake manifold. The intake is some hi-tech plastic stuff and the gaskets looked strange also but cost me 13.00$ at NAPA for the upper and lowers...not bad. Replaced those and it was smooth sailing. Your gaskets are probably dry rotted. After looking at them i probably could have got by with just replacing the upper intake gaskets but since i was that far did the lowers too as the upper is the majority of the work although its not real difficult.

i am having the same problem, and it gets even weirder, it only seems to happen after it rains. I have found that using a can of Seafoam every 3 months helps some. Any other suggestions??
