Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default additional help for radio display

Since I was unable to find a good description here of the self fix for the display problem, the following is a couple links that give good instructions:

1998 Explorer radio problem - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

See page 5 and 6 on the above site. The last thread has some pictures.

http://home.ptd.net/~bubbat55/Files/...aineer_Fix.pdf

The above is a 14 page PDF file with detailed instructions and pictures detailing removal of radio, repair, and radio reinstallation. For those not sure of what they are looking for, the pictures are very helpful.

May your display finally shine brightly.

Default no radio display

I'm an employee of FMC and very disappointed in the quality of radios. I'm having the same problem in my 2001 Ford Escape. I've complained time and time again through the 1-800 #, customer service e-mail, etc., etc. and they say not enough people have complained to make it a recall. I think this is ridiculous! Especially since it seems there are customers across the different ford models who are having the same problem.

I'm not going to give up on this one. I'm contacting the quality team directly to see if they would be willing to do a poll of customers who are having this problem...maybe this will be a wake up that the Company needs to change radio suppliers to give us a better quality product.

I'll keep everyone posted...until then, we'll all be listening to our pre-set station radios with no displays!

Default thanks!

just wanted to say thanks to fraxinusalba for his link to the 14pg pdf instructions. i followed the instructions and was successfully able to fix the radio display on my newly purchased 99 explorer. it was very exciting to say the least since i was about to spend close to $100 to get it repaired. it's great to able to see the stations i'm tuning to now!

I too am struggling with the problem. Upon inspection of the board I found the bottom left (if the copper firewall connection is on your left) resistor to be burned and dead when tested with a multimeter. I cannot make out its spesifications because of the heat discoloration. Can anyone help me?

Default Additonal Help on No Display Issue

Well, I used the procedures in the pdf files. Worked all of about 6 minutes. I ended up doing some more searches and ended up going with the Save My Sanity Swap at Radio Repairs - including Blank Radio Display (Ford & Nissan Quest, Chrysler). I got a rebuilt power supply, came in a box with a return label to ship back my old power supply. Got the package within two days of ordering. And, it comes with a 1 year warranty. I was very impressed with the service and speed (and the comments of others who had used the service). For what it's worth, my radio display has been working glowing bright green ever since. I hope this helps others out there with the same situation.

Lightbulb no display in radio

Had the same problem in my 93 explorer... only time seemed to happen was in winter when I used the heater. It was maddening because it was so intermittent. I would have to turn heater off and let radio cool off. I knew it was about to happen when the radio display suddenly started looking like Klingon language! The radio would then go silent and not work at all, sometimes for days. I finally got fed up with it and replaced it with Pioneer XM radio. Never had the problem again, plus my quality of tunes improved 1000% ! I now only listen to XM radio.
