Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default 2005 Explorer-engine shutoff with cruise control set

The engine shuts down when the cruise is set at approximately 30mph. It restarts easily by putting the transmission in neutral and then turning off the switch and restarting the engine.

I have a 2004 Explorer with the same problem. Can you tell me what your dealer has done to correct this. My Ford dealer can't seem to find the problem or answer.

OK, glad to know I am not the only one with this freakish problem...I have an 04 Explorer and it too does the same thing, but more so happens going up a hill or slight incline. Otherwise it seems to be ok. It just cuts the engine off, no sputtering etc. and you have to drop it in neutral, then start it back up...very scary! If anyone finds out why this is happening pls post Thanks.

Mine did this also once, as I was coming off of an overpass. Luckily it was on an uncrowded country road where I was able to pull over.

No solutions, eh? I just picked up a 2004 Explorer Limited a few weeks ago and it's having this issue. No sputtering or anything during the stall, you just flip on the cruise control and SOMETIMES the engine will just shut off.

Not that it helps, but my 04 does the same thing. Engage the cruise at 30-35 mph and the engine dies without a sputter.

My '05 Exploder also does this, it has no problems crusing at 70-75 with speed control on. Anyone know how to fix it?

Check your Throttle Position Sensor. It probably needs to be replaced. I've heard replacing that and reprogramming the PCM fixes the problem.
