98 Expl. 4x4 won't start...

One day it is working fine. The next morning I turn the key and get nothing. I have lights, windows work, radio works, etc., so I am getting some battery power. I get a couple of clicks and that's it. So far, my mechanic thinks it may be a starter issue. He says to beat on the starter with a hammer while turning the key just to get it started to bring in to him.

I beat on the starter many times. Nothing. I try charging the battery for 30 minutes-- nothing.

Any other ideas?

There is a solenoid located near the bat. on the fender. I was having the same problems and i was told by the local auto parts store to replace that first. I did and haven't had any problems since (6 months).

dont hit the starter to hard as the magnetic field iscreated by permanent magnets that are fragile and could easly be broken.
