Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Default '96 Explorer XLT Check Engine Light

The Check engine light came on today on my '96 Explorer XLT.

Specs: 4.0L, 4WD auto, 119,000 miles, A/C.

Guages show normal oil pressure, temp, and amps.

No noises and engine runs fine. No loss of power.

What should I check to get this light to go back off? It stays on while the engine is running. Can't afford to put it in the shop right now.

I have had the same problem with my 95 explorer. I bought it with 35,000 mi and it has been on since (I now have 140,000 mi on it). I've called the dealer, and had it checked out at several service stations, and they jusy say it "one of those things that happens", and even though annoying, it doesn't affect anything...

Get yourself a cheapo code reader and get the codes yourself....I got one for my Mustang that I had. The cheap ones you have to count how many times the light blinks and then match up the number of blinks in the manual that comes with the reader.

Default ceck engine light

Go to autozone, they will check it for free. Otherwise if you disconnect the battery cable for aout 10 mins it will go away, then if it is a reoccuring problem it will come back.

It's probably just one of your O2 sensors or your catalytic converter. If it's you catalytic converter, have all three removed and put in chips.
