Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Unhappy 1991 explorer problem

I have a 1991 explorer. After it warms up, whenever I am in stop and go traffic with the truck in drive and my foot on the brake, the truck starts to shimmy from side to side and also starts to run rough and feels like it wants to lunge forward. If I put the truck in neutral or park it runs fine, and also once I start driving it it shifts smoothly without any problems. Don't know what's causing it to act this way. Also, I noticed whenever it does this the battery voltage light fluctuates. I checked the alternator and it was putting out the correct voltage.

I would appreciate any help as my son uses this truck to get back and forth to college

Thank you,

Vinnie

It's been awhile since it had a tune up. I was thinking this might be the problem but wasn't sure

Thanks,

Vinnie

That sounds like a logical place to start, and what you spend on the tune-up you will probably save in fuel mileage. Remember to use quality parts.
