Ford Explorer Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Lightbulb Solution for Overheating

Ok, i just read a thread where you all had the same problem but didnt listen to the guy to fix it, so heres my reply, in form of a new post.
The OHC motors needed new tensioners, 40 bux, also, the fan is ALWAYS on, its a belt driven fan, saying that, how ever cast the crank is spoinning, the fan is doing the same. Another thing. REPLACE THE RADIATOR. Think about it. Ok, my grand parents had a taurus a few years back, and it would over head when it was in gear and not moving, HALF the radiotor didnt work propertly. For everytone. Replace belt and tensioner (about 45-mion for you to do yourself. very easy), New thermostat and hoses, and if that dont fix it, new radiator. Now once all these are replaced, you should be good. Untill you fix all this, dont drive you truck fat. if it goes past the H, your gonna granade your motor.

I don't know for a fact, but I would almost bet that Explorers use a thermal clutch fan. It will slip until the contacts spread out from heat and cause the clutch to hold. The fan should spin any time the engine is running, but they will slip at cooler engine temperatures.

Old timers always told me to check if a fan clutch was bad you would...
  1. Let the engine run to operating temperature.
  2. Turn the engine off
  3. Mark a fan blade with a felt pin.
  4. Spin the fan by hand, and note how many revolutions the fan makes.

The mark will help you keep track of how many revolutions the fan makes. I was told if the fan makes more than 1 revolution the clutch was bad (slipping at temperatures where it should be holding).

I would if I could, but I don't know how to! or i just can't, I don't know how to delete posts either!

Hey did you ever hear that without a thermostat your car will overheat, because the coolant moves to fast to transfer any heat. To me that sounds like rubish. Any ideas on that?

Idk, i dont believe it. Because the coolant is always gonna be alot colder then the block anyway. the thermostat even in the open position is still restricting flow so, idk. If i were to do that, i would run an underdrive water pump pully to slow down the pump. I would think running it with out a thermostat would run it to cold.. Which will kill the heater, gas millage, but good for power, and logeviety. About the stick, contact the administrator. Ibelieve moderators can sticky a forum if they are the moderator of that sub forum. I dont see an explorer forum moderator..... i call dibs! But how?.

What type of coolant/water % are you running?
