Davetruck- I don't really think too much of your machine shop. Sorry, just a couple of things struck me wrong. You said you wanted to make some horsepower and this machine shop has approached this like a run of the mill rebuild. 2 months to get a cam? I bought a camera from Hong Kong and got it in 2 weeks. You obviously have a computer and are online, so use it to get some parts. Go to Summit.com and scroll over to shop and click it! They have an online catalog and you can shop for anything. They have an "ask the Tech feature" that can answer any question that you may have about their products or your motor. When you look up a part it will list it's application as well as all it's features and you can use the "compare" feature to view the differences and similarities of several different brands or levels of products. You will get anything you buy in about a week. Once you decide on which parts you want, you can look over E-bay motors and see if someone is selling the same part for less. Even with shipping, you will save big money over buying locally, and most stuff is at your door in less than a week. What rear end and tranny do you have now? My F150 came with a Ford 9" in it and that's what all the drag racers use. The 8.8 rear-end is no slouch. I thought you said you had a truck. You haven't even started building horsepower, and you got a loooong way to go before you start taxing a truck driveline! I'm liking your machinist less and less, and quite frankly, I think he's full of s**t. I'd source parts for you all day long ,too. Before you get in too deep with this guy, do yourself a favor and price some of those parts online. You can also go to Autozone. com and price the stock stuff.

Right now I'll let him finish what he's doing(boring cylinders etc...) I think I will source out the parts at summit like you said......

I'm in a 'hillbilly hick town' I'm lucky to have a machine shop that can even do this......

will summit ship to Canada?

I definetly have lots more thinking to do before I go any further than reconditioning the bottem end.....

I have enough money spent for right now anyway gotta let the bank acount recover,

Lots of cleaning and other stuff that don't cost money to do for now.....

I have to see what I can do with rear end, brakes and tranny too.....

this could still take some time ......

I'm not sure, but I think Summit will ship to Canada, but they want you to pay with real money.lol. Parts are all over E-bay shipping back and forth to Canada. It may take a little longer to get parts, but most go UPS and they ship globally. Before you do too much to those brakes, consider some aftermarket cross drilled/slotted rotors and brand new drums. That will make a huge difference in stopping power, and the cd/s rotors aren't much more than stock. Everything else can be stock, but you may want to upgrade the pads to the rotor manufacturer's recommendation. While you are cleaning everything up under the truck, pay some close attention to the condition of your front end bushings. Jack it up and try moving the front wheels back and forth and up and down while looking at all the suspension parts. Pay paticular attention to the pitman arm on the gearbox and refer to your Ford Repair manual for instructions on how to adjust the gear lash, that alone can make a huge difference in steering control. I know the suspension needs work too.....

I can do this, it just might be a bigger project than I thought....

WHOA- Dave, take a deep breath, and settle down, it'll be alright. The mods I mentioned can wait, the 2 main points I was trying to make is to upgrade your brake PARTS as you buy them, (if you can) and to take note of some of the problems you probably have along the way. The main thing you should do right now is clean and refurbish that engine compartment while there's no powerplant in the way.

Thats what we're working on today ,
The kids have a day off school and I don't work today so we finally get to go out to the garage together....

by the way my engine is done ( he bored the cylinders 30 thou)

now my latest challenge, find a way to go get it, my friend was going to run me down but he blew the tranny in his truck and it won't be rebuilt until next week, if I can't find someone else I'll have to wait

I have my engine back from the machine shop , I found a way to get er home.

The guy got me an engine kit , they did all the machining, including the valve job, new seals etc, bored the cylinders, installed the pistons , polished the crank installed it and thecam, put in all the bearings, new timing set,new lifters etc.....

They also gave me a new oil pump and all the gaskets seals etc.

It looks like they gave me a new main seal but I think that one got put in when they installed the crank.

I'm just wondering if I need to use some sort of gasket seal for the head gasket, the instructions said to put it in dry unless it has a metal face.....

any thoughts on this....?

I have to search the books on that I guess......

lots to do.....

polished off any sharp edges left by the machine shop, chased all the head bolt hole threads.....cleaned the surfaces with brake clean, cleaned out any debris from the oil passages etc....
also got new head bolts

still lots to do.....
