Hi everyone:
I'm new here,my name's Dave and I have a 1986 F-150 with an inline 6 cylinder, 300 engine.
There's over 300 000 km on it.
I think I will just make a project of this and rebuild the entire thing instead of chasing a hundred small problems.
I'm thinking I'll start with the engine, maybe get it out of the truck tear it down, have the cylinder walls machined , replace the rings, valves, etc. I'll be doing a lot of looking around for where to get parts. hopefully I can get all high performance parts for this thing .
I live in a small rural town so I'll find a source of parts first. I plan to start in the new year as soon as I find a vehicle to drive.
Don't care if this takes me a year and I don't care about cost as long as in the end I have "brand new'' truck with losts of horespower.
I'll post here as I go , any advice or tips are gratefully accepted.
thanks jonmark1985 and RacerHog I will be posting pics ,I forgot to mention that, I am indeed going to rebuild the 300 I hope I can find some high performance parts, at the very least I will put new bearings, rings, valves, valve springs, lifters(the whole head) I have a single barrel carb I will see what I can do with that, headers of coarse and a high performance cam.
I will post pics before I do anything but I will do the engine first then work my way back to the rear end, I hope to get some input as I go.
After all the x-mas stuff is over I will start on it.
thanks jonmark1985,
let me just state for the record at this time that I am an amature, I am not a mechanic however I am mechanically inclined, now how would you recomend I acquire those parts?
we have a uap napa here will they bring those in for me or do I go to the manufacturer and have them delivered to me? we have a ford dealership an hour away(if I drive fast).
soon I will start, I will take 'before' pics, then remove the hood, hoses and anything thats in the way or could get broken, then I'll figure out a way to hoist the engine out, most likely I'll buy an engine hoist but I may mount a beam and a chainfall to my ceiling, then I'll start to dismantle the engine .
I'll post more after all this christmas stuff is overwith.....
I like to do business with summit racing or jegs. But Napa can get you some (alot of) performance parts, and its always nice to be able to bring the parts back in case you have a problem.
I have some pics of the way the truck is right now.
all stores were closed today so I got no tools that we were planning to get today, instead we prepared our work area. aka the garage. removed a lot of junk, moved some wood and cleaned up 5yrs worth of dust.
Ok been doin some research:
What I want is do go as fast as I can as soon as I can , cause I just want power not to go fastest over a long streach, so.... I need a cam with "long duration" and as high a "lift " as I can get so I can get "Low end torque"
