You should check the temperature sender.
You can momentarily ground the wire to the gauge and the gauge will needle out. The key needs to be in the run posistion. I like to get a helper to watch the gauge. i also ground the wire out for a short second, I'm fearful that if I ground the wire for too long the gauge wil be burned up. If the gauge needles out your sender is most likely bad. If the gauge doesn't move the wire has a break or the gauge is bad. You could also remove the sender, put it in a pot of boiling water, remove it at various temperatures and measure the resistance.
