I've heard guys say anywhere from 8-10 towing to 15-18 driving...

Dude, that's a BIG engine in a BIG truck... it's gonna use BIG amounts of fuel

Cool V10 Gas mileage

I have an '01 with the following mods: Superchipped, Gibson cat-back, custom y-pipe.

Real world mileage is 12.5 mpg city/hiway average.
Towing a 4500# boat it drops to about 10.5 hiway.

As has been said of the V10: "It will pass anything on the road except a gas pump".

I have a 2001 Excursion w/V10 and I get a consistant 11.2 mpg daily driving. On long trips the milage will get a little better. It is currently bone stock with 79,000 miles, have plans to do some mods to it.

sorry to resurect an old thread, but not sure how to start a new one. I have a 2001 V10 4x4 Crew Cab short box 4x4 3.73 gears, automatic with LT285 75R16 tires. My mileage absolutley sucks, only about 5-6 in town. How come? I drive very easy, when I bought it, the catalytic converter was allready removed. How come such low mileage?? I was hoping for 9-12 in town. It has only about 122,600 miles on it

bigskybry,
Your truck is almost identical to mine, I have a long box and auto. I bought new and have babied it for 140,000 miles. Empty, I get about 14.5 on the highway, cruise set at 65 mph. Biggest factor is our Wyoming wind. Pulling my 32' travel trailer at 60 mph, I get 9-11, (without a headwind.) I also get about 10 mpg in town.

I have a K & N Filtercharger and Banks Power Pack. Neither helped much with fuel economy empty, the Power Pack helps a lot (2-3) mpg with the trailer towing mileage.

You should get better.

An old timer friend told me to start out "like you were pushing a wheelbarrow full of water on a skating rink."--that helps! Read up on the 'net about the "50 mpg club" and use as many of their driving tricks as you can.

I check mileage every fill up. If it starts to fall off, I clean the air filter (K& N) and replace the fuel filter (NAPA gold.) Bad O2 sensors (you should have two) can be a problem. If you replace them, be sure to get them with the long leads! Some universal replacemetns have six inch leads and will not reach the harness. I noticed an improvement after cleaning my throttle body (at 100,000 miles because the idle air control valve was sticking.)

Spark plugs may be an issue. They are easy to change, BUT really easy to screw up! Your Triton engine will blow them out if not installed right and the heads will have to be repaired. I did a huge amount of research before changing mine--and I decided to do it myself after reading posts on various discussions where dealership mechanics reported NOT using torque wrenches, changing them with the engine hot, etc. (Both BIG no-no's according to all I read.)

I can give you a lot of detailed information on the plug change--mine worked fine. It was due at 100,00 miles.

Good luck with the beast! When I bought mine I planned to trade it after 5 years. After eight, I'm thinking maybe I'll look at a new one when they get the 6.2L Boss engine settled in--but ONLY if it gets the 25% improvement in mileage they expect! Otherwise, I like it so well they can bury me in it.
