Ford F - Series The Ford F-Series lineup offers a plethora of models for every occasion or occupation, starting below $20,000 and climbing beyond double that. The F-Series line offers something on the order of 75 permutations, more than some car companies' entire lineups. All are capable of work or play, even those models with luxurious interiors, and all have four doors.

Default 1997 F150, 4.6 4x4 - Won't Shift Into 3rd/4th

Heya,

I'm just looking for thoughts on why this truck might not shift into 3rd or higher. 1st and 2nd work fine.

Truck has 197k miles on it. Ford garage wants $500 just to tell me what the problem might be.

Thanks!

I have seen a similar problem on a brand X that starts with a C. Low voltage at the 'puter caused the electronically controlled transmission to default to second gear.

IS your check engine light on and is the engine otherwise running like crap? IF so, pull codes. You might be in limp mode.

Negative. No check engine lights (now) and the only code/issue is a bad oxygen sensor though that has been an issue for a long time so unlikely
