The F-Series line offers something on the order of 75 permutations, more than some car companies' entire lineups. Default Flashing overdrive light

I have a 97 F150 4x4 with a 5.4 liter engine. Yesterday the overdrive light started flashing. I took it to Autozone and then to a transmission repair shop. Neither could get a computer reading because the check engine light was not on. The transmission doesn't slip but shifts hard when the light is flashing. Could this possibly be a sensor, solenoid, or etc. Could the transmission cooler be clogged and not allowing the fluid to circulate properly and in turn causing the fluid to overheat?

If the OD light is flashing there is a problem. Try another trans shop. Autozone does not have scanners for transmission.

The clutches in the torque converter are slipping and the electronic trans can sense it. It locks the slippage to extend the life of the clutches so you can get it to the shop before it causes further damage. I had a V-10 superduty that did the same. I had the trans serviced, and the shop put in some seal sweller. That bought me another two months, then it was time for a rebuild.

When an O/D light flashes in these, the tranny is usually slowly crapping out. Plan a rebuild/reman soon.
