Ford F - Series The Ford F-Series lineup offers a plethora of models for every occasion or occupation, starting below $20,000 and climbing beyond double that. The F-Series line offers something on the order of 75 permutations, more than some car companies' entire lineups. All are capable of work or play, even those models with luxurious interiors, and all have four doors.

Default 1986 f-150

Hello I am new here as you can tell. I have a 1986 F-150 that I am currently giving it a face lift (LOL). I know nothing about motors at all. I thought I would pose a question to you guys and see what I should do. The truck has a 302 in it now and I thinking about building that motor or a 390. Either way I want to push around 375 to 400 HP. My question is this what type of transmission do I need and rear end as well. This will be an everyday truck but I want it to hook up when I need it to. Any help would be much appreciated.

I would dtick with the 302 or go to a 351.I like the 390 but i dont believ it ever came in an 86 pickup.A c6 would work but it would have to be one for a smallblock or an aod if it is built right would work.

thanks phantom smack. I know the 302 is a strong motor as well. What type of HP can you get out of the 302?

I know guys that are pushing 400 hp easily out of a 302, naturally aspirated. The 390 was discontinued in 1977 iirc. You can swap it in, but it may be more work than you are willing to take on. Either stick with the 302 or swap in a 351w and get some good heads, intake, cam, headers and carb, get it set up right and 375-400 hp are well within reach.
