Ford F - Series The Ford F-Series lineup offers a plethora of models for every occasion or occupation, starting below $20,000 and climbing beyond double that. The F-Series line offers something on the order of 75 permutations, more than some car companies' entire lineups. All are capable of work or play, even those models with luxurious interiors, and all have four doors.

Cool F 150 starting problem

Hi guys; i have a 2000 f150, stick 6. And some times it wont even make a sound when i turn the key. I have ben told that there is a safety switch under the clutch pedal, that after time starts to fail and prevents me from starting the truck. If i slam the clutch pedal hard to the floor it will start. What i want to know is, is that correct and what does it look like and how do i change it. Or is it some thing that just gets dirty or rusty and can be fixed with some wd40. Thanks mike

Sounds like a proper diagnosis to me Mike. Unfortunately, I haven't been under the dash of a stick vehicle in eons, so my answer may be off the mark, but in the past this was a simple fix. Just follow the clutch pedal and look for a switch with 2 wires on it. It will probably have threads on it for adjustment. You may be able to just loosen a lock nut and screw the switch closer to the pedal, or bend the switch holder with pliers. Good luck.

Possible causes for no crank
  • Weak battery
  • Poor (dirty/loose) electrical connections (at the battery, the engine ground, the solenoid/relay or starter)
  • Defective starter solenoid/relay (mounted near the battery)
  • Defective neutral start switch (a.k.a transmission range sensor) - try cranking in all gear position with one foot on the brake
  • Defective clutch safety switch
  • Passive Anti-Thefts System (PATS) issue
  • Defective ignition switch
  • Defective starter
That is not a prioritized list. Any of them could be intermittent.

You might try going to autozone online or rockauto.com and see if wither has a picture of your needed replacement part. Seeing a picture is often helpful.
