Ford Fairlane Ford Fairlane was produced from 1955 through 1969. The original body design was the full sized Ford body which started out as a family vehicle and slowly evolved into many different available models and body styles. The exterior paint and trim options, seemed endless with elaborate cloth woven seat covers and a rainbow of paint combinations.

Question 63 tranny swap

Hi--- I have a '63 Fairlane 2 door HT w/a '68 302 transplant (obviously a 6 bolt). Unfortunately, the old 2-speed Fordomatic was left in and I can pass almost anything except a gas station.
I want to swap it out with a 4 or 5 speed manual. Has anybody here done this??? Which tranny should I zero in on?
I have scrounged a bell crank, and have a nice turned SB flywheel but am hesistant to buy anything else without knowing the best tranny to buy.

Which tranny? Parts needed?
Rear end swap necessary (stock 8" with-- I believe-- 3.50 ring/pinion)

Sorry about the long-winded question... this is a big project for me.

Why do you want to go manual? If i were to chose i would go T5. It is the best if you want overdrive and parts are plentiful. With a stock one you can push 330ftlbs of torque. With some aftermarket parts they can handle around 600. Your stock rear should hold up with some preventative maintenance. There are tons of articles out there on this swap all you have to do is a google search. Ron Morris offers a lot of stuff plus a new universal transmission mount that is pretty bad a**.

How did they manage to get a Fordomatic bolted up to a 6 bolt 302 ???? Are you sure it's not a C-4 ?? Sometimes they leave the linkage and old shift indicator in and modify it to work on the C-4. Curious about this !! The T-5 WC would be the way to go. You will need the later style bell housing and cable clutch release ass'y. Also a new rear mount and the drive shaft will need to be modified. Good luck !!
