Ford Fairlane Ford Fairlane was produced from 1955 through 1969. The original body design was the full sized Ford body which started out as a family vehicle and slowly evolved into many different available models and body styles. The exterior paint and trim options, seemed endless with elaborate cloth woven seat covers and a rainbow of paint combinations.

Default 64 Fairlane 289 Fuel Pump Mystery

Hello, my waterpump went out on my 289.
I pulled over, and stopped and got a ride. Came back in a couple hours and started the car and moved it like 20 feet.

Came back 2 days later with a trailer, and couldn't get car to start. Loaded it on a trailor.

Replaced waterpump, thermostat, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, gaskets...

Try to start. Nothing.
Can suck fuel from fuel line if take off fuel pump - yes
Full tank of gas - yes
Take fuel line off and put gas can strait off fuel pump - doesnt suck it
Went and bought new fuel pump
Same problems.
Can sometimes suck (put my finger over the suction side, then other times it doesnt suck)
What does this sound like? Is there anyway to put this mechanical fuel pump in wrong? Did i get another faulty fuel pump? Is something inside the motor broke that hits the fuel pump lever?

Thanks!

Default Thats weird

Behind the timing case cover attached to the front of the cam is a circular piece that is mounted offset from the center line of the cam.. It's called the fuel pump esentric. It hits the lever on your fuel pump as the cam spins thus giving the carb fuel. Not sure if it's broke or loose but i might wanna verify that if i were you. Instead of removing fan, waterpump, and timing case cover if you take of the fuel pump and rotate the motor you should see the esentric. Again not sure if that's the issue but it might be worth lookin at plus if it aint it, it's a good excuse to drink beer. ha good luck

Awesome, so you say it can be loose?

So it could spin on shaft? That would explain it.

How is it on, a set screw, or is it directly bolted in? If its bolted on i dont see how it could slip, if its a set screw i could...

thanks for your help

Have you tried manually moving the pump arm with a hose in a can of gas to verify the pump actually works ?

Just because it is new doesn't mean it's good.

I was thinking the same thing, but wouldn't create an open container of gas to test it. If I remember correctly it is essentiall a rubber diaphragm on the inside, I suspect that one could feel the vacuum with a finger if it is working.

I own a 65 Falcon with a 289 and I am having the same problem. My car was sitting for about 2 years and I recently replaced the fuel sending unit and attempted to start it. No gas would go to the carburetor. I manually pumped the fuel pump and it would spit out gas very well, but not when I placed the fuel pump back into the block. Could it really be something wrong with the cam and if so, how can I fix it?

Thanks

There is fuel sending unit locking ring that locks the sending unit in place. Once you turn that, the unit should be able to slide right out. When you side the new unit in, make sure you have a good seal. It was very easy to do.
