Ford Fairlane Ford Fairlane was produced from 1955 through 1969. The original body design was the full sized Ford body which started out as a family vehicle and slowly evolved into many different available models and body styles. The exterior paint and trim options, seemed endless with elaborate cloth woven seat covers and a rainbow of paint combinations.

Default Self Adjusting Brakes for my '56 Fairlane

New member here! I am doing a complete overhaul of the brake system on my ’56 Ford Fairlane Club Sedan. I’d like to add self-adjusting brakes like I had on my later Fords from the ’60’s. The kind that adjust the brakes when you back up. Has anybody done this? Are there kits or parts available? Any modifications needed? Has to be easer then adjusting brakes every few months.

You can buy complete hardware kits for the 60's cars, I replaced all the hardware on my 64 Galaxie. I have never done what you are asking, but if the brakes are around the same size as the Galaxie's, you can ask the parts house that you go to, I think that it would work.

I don't see why you couldn't just buy & add the hardware off a 1961 Fairlane (for example). I know a lot of guys who are using these kits on the 1958 & 1959 Big Ford cars & the 1958-60 T-Birds w/o any problems...?

Default Self Adjusting Brakes for my '56 Fairlane

Cool, Thanks guys......I found kits at Concourse parts for both the '61 - '72 Galaxies and the '61 T-Bird. I’m going to check with my buddy at Napa Auto Parts and see if he can get me the kits w/out the shipping costs.

I think you will have to change the backing plate also.

I'm old, but '56 is before my time !

That said, I do remember a few of the guys knocking out the adjustment holes on the bottom of their backing plates. So you might check your '56 backing plates to see if they are there on yours too. This will also mean that you would need to order 4 of those rubber plugs that seal this access hole back off when you are done...

It is not just the adjuster holes.

Non self adjuster don't have the cable and pawl (ratchet) that moves the star wheel when you back up. The backing plate might have different mounting holes for the pins (nails) and springs.

God, I am ancient !
