Default Charging Problems

I ran into an issue this week on my way to a carshow and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction here. I've got a 63 2dr sedan running a 144 and a grinder 3 spd. We've got a lot of rain over here in Oklahoma the past few weeks and I hadn't driven the old bird in over a week due to a broke leg. When I fired it up to head to the show the generator light came on and never went back off. I've gone through all my wiring with no luck and I've opened up the voltage regulator to make sure it was dry. The gen is spinning and to be honest I'm at a loss here. I just wanted to know if anyone knows of any other trouble shooting methods I can try before I tear it out and have it rebuilt. Also, I've heard from a few old farmers around here that if you ever replace a gen, you've got to replace the regulator or visa/versa. Is there any truth to this? Thanks ahead to anyone that can give me a hand.

Oh and I'm keeping this old ford as origional as I can so I'll be sticking with the 6 and am not interested in going to an alternator setup.
