Ford FalconFord Falcon - With standard features such as the exhilarating 6-cylinder Barra 182 engine, Control Blade IRS (sedan only), Sequential Sports Shift (on the optional automatic transmission) and an Intelligent Safety System which boasts a multitude of advanced safety features, the Falcon XT is not only a driver's car. It's also a car that the whole family can enjoy.
I recently purchased a 1965 Ford Falcon 4 door sedan (200 inline 6, 3 speed on the column) that was in storage for +10 years. The reason it was put into storage was that the transmission suffered a massive lube leak and would no longer function properly. I pulled the transmission and found that the extension housing had broken away from the transmission body. Looking at the tranny ID tag, it does not seem to match what would have been installed on the car originally.
Is anyone able to help decode the transmission ID tag?
The tag reads as follows:
i don't have the tag breakdown but can probably help anyway. there are two likely candidates for the trans. the most likely is the 2.77 manual. 2.77 refers to shaft spacing, not ratio. it has a small cantelope size body with 4 bolt top cover, non-synchronized 1st gear and weighs 38 lbs. complete. it is also fairly weak and worth swapping for something better if this is not a restore to original project. the other 3 spd. is the 3.03 with synchro 1st gear. it will have a 9 bolt top cover. if it is marked "RAN" it has 3.02 1st gear ratio and if marked "RAT" it has a 2.42 1st gear and came from a large v-8. the 3.03 tranny can be swapped in place of the 2.77. you will have to also swap bellhousing, trans mount, driveshaft, etc. the SROD 4 spd overdrive from a fairmont/zephyr with the 3.3(200 inline six) can be swapped with some mdification involved. i have tried this, plus the t-85c o.d., and t-5 with my 170. the difficulty level was highest with the v-6 version t-5, but yeilded the best result.
if interested in the t-85c/o.d. swap see"62 ranchero to get ford electric o.d trans." by little blue over on page 2. it was my 1st internet correspondence in the replies, so it is a little messy but i got 'er done. this is an involved swap.
Currently, I am looking for replacement parts and not upgrades. I would like to get it running and moving before doing any kind of improvements.
The transmission has a four bolt cover on the top. 2.77 with non-synchronized first gear. This tranny is also currently stuck in reverse and the second/third gear can be moved between gears. I am looking into a rebuild kit but need to know if this transmission is even worth it, with the broken extension housing and all?
