Hi guys, can anyone tell me was the wheel molding trim the same on the 68 futura falcon sports coupe and the 68 futura sedan? I have been trying to find the wheel molding trim for my sports coupe for a long time. I have found some on a 68 futura sedan of the same year on the internet. It looks similar but I wondered if anyone knew if it would work on my sports coupe?
Thanks
Why won't it? If the Futura trim package had different moldings you'd see it in the photo of the parts on E-bay.
By 1968 US Ford wasn't spending $$$ of special trim parts, whatever appeared on the level II trim package ended up on the level III and above trim packages. (Basic "Plain Jane" trim is level I).
Thanks Yank I appreciate your help! Now I just have to find the piece I need. I can't find a company that makes wheel molding. I have searched the salvage yards and the internet and have come up empty.
Most of the NOS wheel well molding has ended up in the hands of swap meet vendors. There are a few swap meet vendors here in the mid-west that sell only the trim and aluminum body pieces that other vendors won't touch since the items have to be handled with care (i.e. not thrown into a trailer at the end of a swap meet).
But how does one get in touch with these vendors between meets????
Yank, I know what you are saying, I have called all around and have had no luck. I live in the middle of nowhere so I have never even seen a swap meet. I'm surprised that nobody remakes those parts? They make all of the emblems! I guess I don't get that.
From what I have seen at swap meets it appears the vendors bury the parts in the ground, then dig them up in a feeble attempt to sell them then take the leftovers home and bury them again until next time.
Remake "vintage" 1968 Falcon chromealuminum alloy wheel well trim? Why? If companies remade all the stuff that went on every out-of-the-mainstream vehicle ever made they would have no time to make parts fro new cars.
On the serious side, do not forget Australia and New Zealand when looking for trim parts. They made/sold about as many new cars per years as the U.S. sold in one month! The XT, XY, XW series might have used the same trim. I know, the cost of sending such a part to the State. would be $$$.
What is the difference between the 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 US Falcon trim?
As for "buryiing parts" . Now and then I have purchase lots at inventory reduction autions (especially when Ohio started taxing dealers for NOS on hand) and beleive me having to store, drag out, display, put back in storage all those small parts is too much like work.
Sometimes you think you won't bother taking a certain batch of parts to a swap meet and sure enoguh that's when someone will stop by and ask if I still have the items.
And yes, it costs money for the average vendor to have those parts on hand for when a restorer comes calling. It's never a case of "Well, he bought it cheap at and auction and now he's trying to flece the people who want the parts.
In my case the "profit" is lost when there isn't a place to store the parts. Unrusted NOS quickly becomes justed scrap metal. Storage costs $$$.
Yank, I could be wrong but I was told by a falcon guy in California who seemed to know what he was talking about that only trim from a 68 will go on a 68. Is that true?
Sorry to say my "Falcon" knowledge, or, make that knowledge of Falcons, is limited beyond 1965. I did have one 68 that came as part of a deal but the rear of the body was all body putty so I sent it straight to the salvage yard.
To date I did move a friend's 68 at a car meet but other then that I never took the time to look over the car to see what was what. I can tell you it has square tail light lenses...
(And if I could find another good 66-70 I'd send to OZ for a grille and taillights from an XT series. Really dresses up the "square" body Falcon.)
