Default Just picked up a 64 convertible

Hey Guys... just thought I'd search out a Falcon forum and this looks like a good place to put down some roots.

Recently, my father gave me 'the family's' 64 convertible. Unfortunately it was because my parents are getting a divorce and he won't have any room for it anymore. I wish it were under different circumstances, but I'm happy to give her a good home regardless.

He's had it since about 1994, 40k miles on the odo & zero rust. no heater (originally a FL car). I used to just wax the crap out of it before I could drive & when I finally got my license I had a little bender with it & had some work done to the rear end. The entire rear half (sheetmetal) is a 65 & we still have yet to put the chevrons back on, but it's overall in pretty good shape.

i kinda like the little 170, though i wish I knew my way around a carb.. I'm from the throttle body & sensor generation with my other toy, this is all new to me.

Well guys, nice to see the falcon has a following... Here's some pics:

not to my knowledge. it's been as pictured since we got it in the mid 90's. maybe the previous owner did, i really dont know.

i've been doing a good bit of reading over at fordsix.com and i'm torn between sprucing up the 170, or putting in the almost-ready-to-go 302 swap i have for it. for now, i'll follow the advice i give anyone looking to fix up their car.... leave it be for a year or two, until I actually have a plan for it.

The one out of my '63 is red, also looks like your's was around the spark plug holes.
I just did the 289 swap on mine,it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it could be.

ONly the valve cover and air cleaner were painted a "color" on the pre-65 Fords. The long block was black enamel.

Ford hasn't painted an engine all red for ages! And Ford NEVER painted the pulleys anything but black.

More then likely the engine in the car is a rebuilt unit. Check the block and head casting numbers as on rebuilds they seldom match in regards to years.

Now days there is a lot out there to "soup up" the 200 I6. Also with the 200 over the 170 you have a better & stronger motor, one thing is more main bearings.

Switching to a 302 means that you have to change your suspension and more.

Get a 200, put a 2v on it with headers and electronic ignition and you will end up with a real peppy car that gets good mileage (as long as you right foot dosen't have the lead boot on.

Research it more, there is a lot of info and dedicated 6cyl sites out there,

TJ

My word, someone with common sense. Are you lost and strayed onto this board by accident?

LOL!
