I have a 64 Falcon convertible with a 200 inline six. Not the factory engine. The car came with a vintage air AC unit that puts the condenser in front of the radiator.
The car currently has no shroud and a five blade thirteen inch fan. Also, not the original.
I only have about an inch and a half between the snout of the water pump and radiator core on the back and about the same between the core and the AC condenser on the front.
Is there a smaller water pump? Even if I grind the snout that will only give me about another hafl inch. Is there a thinner radiator made?
unfortunately the falcon engine bay is not very big but they do make thin electric fans (either pusher/puller style).....you can also stick with the stock setup and get a factory shroud....it all depends on how much you want to spend and function of the vehicle (daily driver vs cruiser,etc)
Look on the magazine rack for one of the street rod/rat rod magazines out last moth with the cover blurb "Make your own fan shroud".
Also, you can add a barrier, sheet metal or glass fiber, that sits in front of the radiator support that is funnel shaped to direct more air into the radiator opening. Most of the air striking the front of a Falcon DOES NOT pass through the radiator (also causes drag on th e car).
That's why newer cars have "tunneling" in front of their radiators. Better air flow less drag to effect MPG.
Interesting suggestions. When I am moving I am ok. It is when i am sitting at a light or in traffic that i watch my temerature start it's trek to the right.
I will look into fabricating something. I looked at the slim fans and none are thin enough.
Why not get a pusher to mount on the front side? I did this with my '32 roadster. It worked very well. I had A/C as well, I just mounted the fan in front of the condenser.
My ac condenser is mounted to the radiator support in front of the radiator. It is a slim design and my grille angles down at the bottom. I may look into that though. The best I could do might be a twelve incher. will that make any difference???
Yes, diameter makes a GREAT difference. Not getting into the physics but ask yourself, doesn't the last three inches (tip) of a large diameter fan travel through a greater volume of "space" then the three inches of of a smaller diameter fan? (Hint:That last three inches of the fan blade does most of the air movement.)
"Pusher" fans (mounted in front) are not as effective as "pullers" as all fan blades throw air outwards as much or more then through the fan. Without a fence around the blade t direct the air a pusher displaces air towards the closed portions of the radatior support which serves no purpose in regards to cooling.
A "puller" deflects the air AFTER it has been through the radiator.
But is a pusher is all that you have room for use it.
There are various shaft length water pumps that fit the Falcon style Ford six, talk to a person in a parts department/auto parts store that is willing to look up the pumps in a cross index vs "this is what the computer calls for". This is common pratice in large trucks, for some reason not with cars.
Another option I don't see mentioned is electric fans. Take a look at some of the small, highly efficent units being used on the new small cars. These fans are engineered to be efficent, not, "This looks like it will work".
Nothing says you can't mount such a unit on a Falcon with the use of homemade brackets. (Besides, removing the fan blade from the belt drive increases the amount a power your engine can deliver to the drive train. In "some" cases that can amount to 20%!!!)

I would live to drop in one if I could fine one that fits. There is very lille room behind the radiator. I will look at fabbing a shroud around the existing fan and see what happens. If need be maybe I can put a small pusher on the front and fab a funnel.
I like the Black Magic fans, they come with their own shroud. I ran one on my 1992 Mustang GT. It had a stock 2 core radiator and a Paxton supercharger. You all know Superchargers build some wicked heat and the Black Magic worked fine unless I was seriously racing hard. Eventually went to a 3 core radiator with the Black Magic fan.

I would imagine manufacturing a shroud could be a bit challenging, I'd like to sugggest that you take some measurements and take a stroll through a pick and pull.
