Ford Focus Overall, it feels cushier than other compacts, both in terms of its comfortable seats and its soft suspension. It's fun to drive, however, with agile handling. It's comfortable on long trips and stable at high speeds. The Focus is among the best of the compacts in terms of ride quality and has been lauded by the enthusiast publications for its handling.

Default overheating when idle

I have been having trouble with my 02 Focus zx3 overheating. When I drive the temperature is fine, but if it is warm outside and I have been driving for awhile once I stop at a light or get stuck in traffic the engine starts to overheat. I replaced the thermostat already and that didnt help. Anyone have any idea? I would appreciate the help.

Make sure that your electric fan is kicking on.

I had same concern in my car, not a ford though. But like jonmark said, make sure the fan turns on. My car gets really hot in hot days.

The fan only seems to come on when the air conditioning is on. I replaced one of the fan relays (one of the plugs in the fuse box) but that didnt help.

Yeah, if the fan kicks on, the relay is good. There is a coolant temp sensor that operates the fan.

Do you know where that coolant temp sensor is? I originally bought that part but could not find it. I found a schematic that showed it in the same housing as the thermostat but did not see it on my car. Thanks for the help.

Follow the upper radiator hose, usually is where it meets to the block.

Default I have a sililar problem

My 2001 focus SE with the 2.0l zetec is having a similar problem in that the fans work with the A/C on but are not comming on themselves. The coolant temperature gauge seems to be working but it does not go above the mid point on the gauge even if the engine is overheating. Could this be caused be the coolant temperature sensor as well?

I have found out that the zetec engines do not have a coolant temp sensor, but a cylinder head temp sensor and according to the dealership that doesnt control the fan. Im back to square 1 trying to figure out how to fix the problem, I might give in and just take it to the dealership and get raped.

You may ask the dealership what does control the fan relay then, if the coolant temp sensor doesn't exist.
