Ford FocusOverall, it feels cushier than other compacts, both in terms of its comfortable seats and its soft suspension. It's fun to drive, however, with agile handling. It's comfortable on long trips and stable at high speeds. The Focus is among the best of the compacts in terms of ride quality and has been lauded by the enthusiast publications for its handling.
I am having a problem with my wife's focus. A few weeks ago she was driving it, when all of a sudden it started to lose power and then altogether died and it would not start back up. So I go ahead and tow to the house and did a little research. Well from what I understood the reason why it did that was supposedly a bad fuel pump, ok. Well I called ford and they would not cover it under the recall cause her vin number was not on their list. So, I go out and buy one from Autozone. Ok no biggie. Well I get it installed and everything is hooked back correctly and guess what still nothing. I am at lost for words here. Everything is on and running but the damn engine will not crank. Poured some gas down in the carburetor and still nothing. Changed out plugs, wires, coil-pack, air filter, fuel filter, and even changed the oil. I am at lost on what to do now. I have heard a few people say to check the timing but damn it, I don't know how. And I certainly do not want to change it out either cause of the tight space. Can someone please give me some insight on what it might be or what it is. Thanks In Advance.
when the engine turns over , does it sound fast like no compresion ? could be broken or striped timing belt. if thats good you need the basic 3 air, fuel,. and spark . if you dumped gas down the throttle body and the engine didnt even flinch , I would check for spark next. if you have no spark go to the crank sensor next. the crank sensor tells the coil when to fire. also go to your battery junction box under the hood CHECK EVERY FUSE!! you may have a blown ecm fuse. possible from the worn out fuel pump. also check the wires on the starter there is a TSB out on them .
the engine sounds normal maybe a little faster than usual.....I had a mechanic friend of mine listen to it over the phone and he told me that it might have jumped time. We poured gas down the throttle body and it tried to start but would not go. Every fuse has been checked with a multi-meter and we have spark. I haven't checked the wires on the starter but I will the moment I get a chance which won't be till Friday.
pull the top plastic cover over the timing belt off so you can see the belt , have someone turn the engine over see if the cam is turning, also if it back fired though the throttle body when you poured gas down it and tried to start it , it most likely jumped time. if this is so when the timing belt is replaced , REPLACE the water pump also! this is driven off the timing belt. should the water pump fail you will be doing this all over again . this is an 01 so I am asuming it has at least 80k on it and the timing belt being 7 years old , not surprized it broke.
lol yeah.......and it has well over 120k on it. Friday is when I will be able to check timing and hopefully that is it and then replace whatever else needs to be replaced. I will post back with the results by Friday evening. Thanks.
Your Focus is showing the classic signs of fuel pressure failure (not to say it might not be ignition, which do NOT suddenly have a timing shift). First things first. Find a quiet spot (garage with the doors closed), have someone turn ON the ignition. You should hear the pump (in the fuel tank) run for about two-three seconds. If it does, the fuel pressure is likely good and the only way to be certain is to put a pressure guage (capable of>100psi) in the line. If it does NOT, then check the input voltage at the fuel pump relay then check the relay is working. If this is all good, it will be ignition.
Any more detail, just ask, but to be polite, if you don't undersatnd all this, it might be better to get help from someone who does.
Let me know

Fuel pump does come on.....I hear it come on. I will be able to check the fuel pressure for sure on friday when I get off work. How do you check the fuel pressure on these things though cause I did not see a fitting on the fuel rail. Thanks.
