I have a 2000 Ford Focus lx , it has been idleing pretty fast last couple of weeks, I have been getting engine light on, and have a p0171 error code on my obd ll reader, can any one tell me how to fix this? So far I think I may need to replace my Idle Control Valve, or do I have a loose vacuum line somewhere that needs to be reconnected? Thanks in advance for your help.
I have a Focus 2000 automatic transmission and have the same vibration problems when starting cold. I have not changed the timing belt yet and want to thanks the person who gave us this tip.
In the case of jimmyzs2003, that code is related to vacum leakage... I suggest to check first the hose that goes from the enginge valves cover (PCV valve) to the accelereation body. I had the same problem like a year ago and once I replaced that hose the problema dissapeared. Sometimes it is just fractured so it is not easy to identify the portion of the broken hose. This should not be an expensive part. If the problem persisits, then you should check if the IAC Valve is properly tightened. If the problem is still not fixed, you should start checking your engine cover, it could have a vacum leakage and you could need to go to someone dedicated to repair this stuff.
New guy here, I recently purchased an 01 and am having the same symptoms, I am wondering if it could be the TC causing the vibrations? Serviced the trans fliud/filter and found a bunch of sludge like stuff in the pan, Wondering if the TC has this slugde stuff and it is sitting in the bottom of the TC until it gets hot
It takes my car appox 40 miles for the vibes to go away,
Also like many others thought maybe motor mounts, but would they make it vibrate only when cold and go away once it gets hot (engine temp).
I am going to drain the TC this weekend after a long drive, hope this helps
I also have the vibrations in my 2000 Focus ZX3 with 112k--started in the summer when going over dips in the road, and got really bad in the winter (Vermont). Like everyone else on here the vibrations got better as the car heated up...interestingly though the vibrations were much worse if I let the car sit for 5 days rather than overnight, even though the engine itself should be just as cold either way.
It turned out that my flex pipe in the exhaust system was broken, so they fixed that and removed the loose heat shield in the back, which cut out most of the horrible vibrations. But I think that just confounded the original issue--it still does that minor vibration thing going over dips or soft bumps. It really sounds like the tires but it did it even on summer tires and different rims.
I had thought about engine mounts but I couldn't figure out as one poster said why it would settle down as the car warmed up...maybe something with the engine heat on the rubber of the mount? How expensive would it be to get my mounts changed, and do I need to change all of them? The sound comes more from the right side of the car, up front in the engine compartment.
Anyone have success with vibrations after replacing the engine mount? And is there any real danger to leaving it be and ignoring the sound? Thanks!

I had my cranshaft mount changed and also now about to change the right front motor mount. The 1st part was 40$ and the 2nd $50. Of course labor varies.
Your problem sounds similar to mine, but the mechanics can't figure out what it is and now the vibrations are getting worse and its coming from the right side also. The struts are fine and i had an alignment and balance done..that was not the problem. See if the mechanic can have a look at the front motor mount and try propping it up to see if the vibration stops (it did on mine). Perhaps that is the problem but I am no mechanic nor car expert..just sounds like my problem and he suggested I replace the motor mount ...
After reading a number of post with a similar problem, allow me to tell you what I have done so far. I have a 00 Ford Focus Wagon, automatic, 130K on her. Last year I had to travel from eastern Ohio to Detroit, Michigan, a few hundred mile trip. I began to experience a vibration felt in the steering wheel, seat, floor....everywhere, just a strange humming vibration...sort of like a vibrating chair feeling. This was in the late fall, so the weather was getting colder and would be cold in the mornings and would warm up to the low mid 50's in the afternoon. Like many of you have explained, after the car would warm up the vibration would lessen or even go away. This would suggest either a hard rubber mount getting lose from the heat or more likely the expansion of an engine metal component once reaching a certain temperature. After spending a week in Michigan I drove home and looked at the car. Being a somewhat "back yard" mechanic I myself could not find anything loose or broken which would lead to the diagnosis. After doing some further research, I found that this year and model has had some problems with their motor mounts. There are 3 motor mounts on this vehicle. I replaced all 3, and the vibration seem to go away. That was in February of 09. It is now October of 09 and the vibration is starting up again. I took the vehicle over to my buddies garage and we put her up on the rack. We checked the motor mounts and they seem to be fine and intact. With that said, the one mount on top, right under the fluid bottle, often referred to as the "dampner" is difficult to check so we decided to replace that one again. It did not fix the vibration. Sooooooooo....what we are thinking is that possibly the harmonic balancer is worn. Tough to check this so probably will just go ahead and replace her. Haven't done it yet, but just wanted to share this "theory" with all of you. Any certified mechanics out there reading this or anybody that has changed theirs let me know.
