Default grinding noise when starting

Since we're dealing with the end of the warranty, I was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced a grinding noise when cold starting their van?
This has been happening since we bought her, new in '06. I have asked Ford to look at this, I am worried it could be a future problem with the starter but they can't find anything.

thanks for any advice or feed back!

The only grinding I can think of is from an unaligned starter and flywheel. Could it be a really bad electrical buzz you are hearing? If there is a serious problem, it will become evident once this completely fails.

I would be sure to save an documentation relating to your discussions with the dealer so you can have ground to stand on when it breaks a few miles after the warrantee expires.

Possibly you have a partially torn flex plate.
Have them remove the examination cover, and move the flywheel one complete revolution.

So I took my baby in to our personal mechanic, whom I trust, and he said there was a valve leak, and a few other minor problems. My Husband and I took her to Ford (has to be done in the service depatment of the dealership)
They had her for two days, changed a lightbulb, didn't even wash her as I asked, couln't find anything. Today I brought her back and in no uncertain terms told them "If my mechanic says there is a leak, there IS a leak." They found it.A leaking vave cover Gasket is this serious? are all service departments this inadequate?

As far as this being serious goes, that depends on how you look at it. Is this causing other damage by leaking onto electronic components that could be damages? Although these are pretty durable to a bit of oil and dust, it is possible.

From the aspect of losing all your oil, yes.. You will be better served with it in your engine. If you check oil levels daily you could 'limp' it along for a little while until you get it fixed.

Valve cover gaskets are a pretty simple fix. They are not pressurize seals; they simply keep the oil from splashing out the top of the engine. They are also pretty cheap seals; anywhere from say $8 to $25 bucks or so for the part at any discount parts store. I haven't priced these for Freestars but they have always been pretty cheap in my experience.

Get yourself a Haynes Manual (dependingon your mechanical experience, this may not be neccessary), the parts, a nice day, a few basic tools and you are all set to fix this yourself.

I read once that dealers have to steal to make money on warranty work. Steal from the manufacturer, or steal from the customer.

I stopped using a dealer for warranty repair at 17K miles after the second time they screwed up the brakes when just replacing a brake hose.
