| I live in Montreal, Canada where winter driving is hard on cars, especially with all the salt and grim on the roads. I too had that high-pitched whistling sound with my 2005 Freestar.........reading the comments posted here, especially abiKasim's post of July 2006, I put my 2005 Freestar through two non-contact, car washes in the space of a week, with the second one designed to focus water on the underbody and wheels.......problem solved, no more high-pitched whistling sound. |

| Squeeling sound Have a 2005 Freestar Cargo van with 80000km on the odo. This problem started after the dealer replaced the front brakes. Its a high pitched squeel coming from the right front. It seems to happen when the brakes have not been used for a while, and only when ii have driven for an hour or so and i assume all is warm down there. It goes away when i run through a puddle. It is so loud. When going through an underpass it echoes off the walls. Pedestrians definately hear it as they watch me drive by. The dealer cleaned off the pads and re applied the glue that holds the outboard pad in place. The problem went away. Good luck to you all. |

| It's the wheel bearings............... In my case the hIgh-pitched sound became progressively worst, sharper. And yes, it would also go away in wet weather or after a car wash, but it would always return. The hsound became so bad that I could barely drive the car. I brought it to my Ford dealer. I showed the Service people a TSB on the 2005 Ford Freestar and the defective bearings. They would do nothing unless "they (Ford) heard the sound". Also the service people claimed there was no service bulletin for the bearings, this dispite the TSB which they discounted as "being on the Internet" and thus of no value.
Finally, in a road test, a Ford mechanic "heard the sound" and knew almost immediately it was the front wheel bearings. I made an appointment for a few days ahead to have them checked, and I left the dealership.........I couldn't wait that long...........the next day the sound was so sharp, so painful, that I couldn't drive the car any more. I brought it to the service department, with a throbbing heahache and tears in my eys from the pain........the ladyin Serivce took my keys....the bearings were replaced that night.
I looked at the mechanic's report when I picked up the car the next day: the bearings were completely "finished", worn out.........at 62,000 kilometers!
IT'S THE BEARINGS...NOT THE BRAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Very annoyed I guess I am not crazy. I have been having this high pitched sound on my 2004 Freestar since 27,000 miles. I have had it into the dealership multiple times and nothing has been done. I was even embarassed to drive it down through town it was so noisy. Now I am past warranty with 40,000 miles and the transmission just quit. No symptoms and fluid levels were good. I don't know if one problem lead to the other, but I am driving my last Ford if they continue to not want to fix the known problems. I am going to take a copy of everyones post to the dealership and show that this is not just a one vehicle problem. |

| Impressed I guess maybe I haven't driven my last Ford. They are standing by there product. What was a $2600.00 repair job on my transmission, Ford is paying most of it. I still have to pay the $600.00 for the labor, but Ford is covering the rest. I can handle that! |

| My '04 Freestar is parked at the dealership as it is no longer safe to drive. Front wheel bearings/hubs are shot. There are no replacements available. I am paying for a vehicle I cannot drive!!! Nice!!!! I am faced with renting a vehicle at my own expense as the bearing/hubs have been replace once under the origional recall. The vehicle is off warranty.
The last time I drove the my van, I had the brakes lock up without touching the brake pedal. This happened on the freeway during rushhour........just luck that there wasn't a MAJOR WRECK!!!! I got off onto side streets and it happened again. Drove the rest of the way to the dealer at 30 km/h. Made some people mad at me but at least no accidents.
The Ford Dealer tells me that this is the fourth time that Ford has had to redesign the bearings and this is one of the reasons that the Freestar has been discountinued.
How......While I was cancelling my full insurance on this van, I had to explain to the adjustor what happened. I was told that had I been in an accident, my insurance would NOT have covered me as I was driving a DEFECTIVE VEHICLE.
Please feel free to copy this and take it to your dealer when you take your Freestar in to have it inspected. |

| It's the bearings.........mine were so loud I was in tears. Because my 2005 Freestar's nails-on-the-chalkboard sound was intermittent, I had a very hard time convincing my Ford dealer that the problem was indeed the bearings. Once the sound became less intermittent , a technical heard the sound he knew immediately the bearings were shot. Both front-end bearings were replaced at 80,000 km, fortunately under warranty. |
