My Crown vic has a PATs system that requires a programmed key to start the car. They are big and bulky. I carry a much flatter key in my wallet that will open the doors, but won't start the car in the event that I lock my keys in the car. You might consider using one of those "hide a key" magnets if you have a PATs system.
In an emergency, if your van is a windstar, you can screw off the antenna, pull the top of the door out a bit, and push the antenna through the weatherproofing, straight down onto the door open button. Ask me how I know
Glad everything worked out ok.
