Ford FreestarThe Ford Freestar is a solid, highly capable minivan that performs well and offers all the latest safety features. Much of the Freestar's structure and design came from the Windstar it replaced. Windstar offered class-leading safety and solid performance for its time. Freestar is the highest quality minivan it has ever built.
Hi, I just purchased a class III hitch on Craigslist for my freestar from a fellow who just recently returned 6 freestars from a lease with Ford. I had to ask him how they went!!!!
He said besides normal maintenance and the typical normal problems associated with vehicles they were very reliable, best fleet of vehicles he's had, much better than the grand caravans prior.
I had to ask....being fleet vehicles.... How many Tranny or engine jobs??
He replied non at all. All transmissions and engines were in excellent condition till return. He said they were very solid vehicles and put loads of milage on them and for towing trailers too.

On your signature you say "no transmission or header gasket problems yet!!" Well there isnt any headers on the Windstar, I will assume you mean head gasket since the Windstar uses Exhaust Manifolds?

Speaking of hitches... For overall general use, which class is the most appropriate for this vehicle? I want to be able to use the vehicles full potential without throwing excess weight on it and some of the hitches seem pretty dinky; you might find them on a Prius or something.
A Class III is rated for 5000-6000 lbs, the hitch I purchased is a Reese hitch with a 2 inch receiver. Freestars are good for 3500 Lbs but require transmission and engine coolers, also wiring has to be provided for electric brakes(Tow Package). I would guess that a Class II would be plenty at 3500 Lbs max but i believe they come with 1 1/4 receivers, 2 inch receivers are much more standard for attachments like bike racks, etc.The owner's manual says 2000 Lbs max without the Tow Package but it appears according to the weight calculations its really only 1200 lbs.
As for any more hitches available.. Last one.. Got it for $50.00.. lol.
Got the header to head gasket typo corrected .. Picky boss I see....lol

Really a class III hitch is way too much for these vehicles, reason why...... Well when you load up the interior with passengers and junk you cant tow anything that a class III can handle anyway cause your towing capacity drops.
I have a class III on my Windstar, why..... It was $50 used so I bought it, I would have never made a class III my first choice but $50 was a deal breaker. I only tow a 4X8 trailer and it is never loaded to the max anyway.
